The 33rd Feria Internacional del Libro de Buenos Aires, or International Book Fair is the largest book festival in Latin America and runs from Abril 16 to May 7, 2007 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This year’s festival is nicknamed “Libros Sin Fronteras,” or “Books without Borders.”
The fair is one of the largest in the world and attracts more than a million people each year. Many special events take place in the event complex and around the city during the three weeks from exhibitons, book sales in all languages, readings, lectures, roundtable discussions, presentations, signings, courses, workshops, and children’s activities. There are also meetings and special events for publishers, editors, and publicists.
This year, courses will discuss the work of Juan José Saer, Manuel Mujica Lainez, Olga Orozco and J.R.R. Tolkien. Each cours last for two days, is free, and space is limited on a first come basis. Other special lectures and workshops cover various subjects from history, scriptwriting, art, music, and culture and are lead by top professors and scholars from around the world.
Other events include a book of the day, mini-festivals on poetry, oral narration, awards such as the best educational book and many others.
This year the fair director Marta Díaz made a special invitation to U.S. librarians to attend the event, as book prices at the fair are the lowest available anywhere. The event is held at the La Rural exhibition complex; Predio Ferial de Buenos Aires. Nearly all events are open to the public.
