Argentina's financial crash and peso devaluation of 2001 transformed Buenos Aires into one of Latin America's cheapest destinations, allowing for cheap apartment rentals.
Argentina's tourist boom has made renting an apartment in Buenos Aires much more affordable than in the United States or Europe, although prices in Buenos Aires in general are rising. Midrange hotels in Argentina's capital start at around 45 American dollars (plus an IVA tax of 20%). Furnished apartment rentals start at the same price. Visitors to the city who have a enough cash to spend on a hotel should consider renting an entire apartment instead. BenefitsThe benefits of renting an apartment are plenty. First, apartments come with kitchen access. The ability to prepare food at home greatly reduces the cost of eating out, one of the easiest ways to inflate your travel budget. Apartments also provide a more relaxing and spacious atmosphere than hotels. Using an apartment as a travel base replicates the feeling of home. Where To Stay?Buenos Aires is divded in more than twenty neighborhoods, each with its own feel. Younger travelers, who are less concerned with security will want to gravitate toward the southern neighborhood of San Telmo, home of Buenos Aires' famous Sunday antique market and home to many of Argentina's youth hostels. The area around Defensa street is always safe to walk, but at night walking to the center from San Telmo opens tourists up to the possiblity of experiencing run-ins with petty crime. More fastidious travelers with bigger restaurant budgets should gravitate toward the northern neighborhood of Palermo. The ciy's food scene thrives here. The neighborhoods of Recoleta and Barrio Norte are both within walking distance from Palermo. Those who want to save on the cost of renting an apartment should consider staying in the city center. The neighborhoods of Congreso, Almagro, Montserrat, and anything labelled "center" all provide easy walking access to the theaters and other attractions of downtown Buenos Aires. While they are not nightlife centers, the reduction in price tag can offset the inconvenience for those willing to put up with a long walk, bus ride, or taxi back home. How to Rent an ApartmentThe easiest way to get ahold of an apartment is through one of the many internet sites. A slew of websites will guide those interested through the process. Potential apartment renters can also consult travel guides. Lonely Planet's guides to Buenos Aires, Argentina and South America on a Shoestring al include information about apartment rentals. Generally speaking, apartment rentals are only available for those who plan to stay for at least a week.
